Question:  When will I be notified of the competition results?

Answer:  The selection process consists of separate rounds. Each applicant is notified by mail of his/her status at the end of each round.  Typically, we expect to complete the semi-final round by mid-September and all applicants are notified of their final staus by mid-October.  The 2003-2004 workshop began in December.

Question:  What do you look for when choosing Fellowship winners?

Answer: Writing and storytelling talent. We choose a mix of screenwriters, novelists, short story writers, and playwrights. The only criterion is excellence in writing and storytelling. We're not looking for particular kinds of stories or genres.

This year’s fellows include a playwright from San Francisco, a fiction writer from New Hampshire, a screenwriter from Los Angeles who just had her first baby, a screenwriter from Texas who had been freelancing as a script reader, a fiction writer who had been teaching English, and a playwright from Columbia University.

Past winners have written family drama, science fiction, comedy, action ... everything from a full length play about a 19th Century psychiatrist set in France (30 yr. old grad student) to a screenplay about a boy who befriends a ghost (25 yr. old nursery school teacher) to a play about a Co-Op "super" in NY (35 yr. old doorman) to a nationally acclaimed novel about the Vietnam War (46 yr. old doctor) to a script about politically motivated murder in DC (21 yr. old screenwriter) to a collection of short stories about Jewish life in NY (53 yr. old activist/writer).

Question:  Can writers from outside the U.S.A. apply?

Answer:  Yes.  The WFP is open to writers around the world. International applicants typically obtain money orders in U.S. dollars for the application fee and purchase International Postal Coupons for the SASE.

Question:  Can co-authors apply?

Answer:  Yes.  Please have both authors sign the application form.

Question:  Does the $39.50 entrance fee cover all submissions, or each separate submission?

Answer:  Only one $39.50 entrance fee is necessary, and it covers all the materials that you send in.

Question: When can I apply for next year's program?

Answer:  Please check back in January, 2004 for information about the 2004 WFP.

Question: What information should be on my title page?

Answer:  Each writing sample should have a title page with the author’s name and the title of the piece. If you have questions, please feel free to E-Mail us at: Info@chesterfield-co.com.

NOTE: This address is intended for you to leave a message or ask a question not answered in the preceding pages. We cannot accept unsolicited material here, whether story ideas or screenplays. If you would like to make such a submission, you must do so by mailing in your application.
